The Dōgo Reborn Project

On January 15th, 2019, repair work of the 125-year-old Dōgo Onsen Honkan began to preserve the building for future generations to enjoy.
This is the first time in Japan in which a public bathhouse that has been designated as an Important National Cultural Asset has been kept open while repairs are being done to preserve the building.
The Phoenix, a symbol of eternal life that gives guidance to people across time and space and which Osamu Tezuka considered his life's work, watches over the revitalization of Dōgo Onsen, a place that has healed people for generations.
There will be more events and features such as lighting-ups and the original animation.
Please enjoy experiencing the Dōgo Onsen Honkan in a way that you can only do so during this time!

The Dōgo Onsen Honkan's art wrap is complete!
On the north side, 10 wall-art panels can be seen

On Friday, July 19th, 2019, in front of Shinrotei at the east side of the Dōgo Onsen Honkan, the unveiling ceremony of the Dōgo Onsen Honkan's art wrap took place. Tomochika, the captain of the pep squad "Just right, Matsuyama," came to support the event. Also there was GONNA, a dynamic percussion group consisting of Japanese drumming and marimba. At the event, the art wrap of the Phoenix that is on the giant scaffold called suyane, which is 20 meters tall at its peak and with a circumference of 100 meters, was revealed. On the north side are 10 wall-art panels. One of those panels called "The Arrival of the Phoenix" was also unveiled. On the art wrap, a giant Phoenix, an egret which is the symbol of Dōgo Onsen, Dōgo-Onsen-related historical figures who appear in the animation, and a famous character from the original manga series "Hi no Tori, the Phoenix" are drawn. Other than "The Arrival of the Phoenix," some wall-art panels on the north side are manga panels on which Tezuka Productions drew the story of the animation in manga style. The art wrap and the wall-art panels also have AR function and if you download the free dedicated app and hold your smartphone up against them, you will be able to enjoy seven AR contents such as exclusive videos and original photo frames. Furthermore, you will find the characters from "Hi no Tori, the Phoenix: Dōgo Onsen Chapter" on direction boards around Honkan. Please enjoy them while walking around the Dōgo Onsen Honkan.

Projection Mapping on the Dōgo Onsen Honkan

Dōgo Onsen + NAKED:
MESSAGE - The Arrival of the Phoenix

7 to 9:30 pm, every day
Taking place on the north side of Honkan (No admission charge)

Created and directed by NAKED Inc.

On April 27th, 2019, projection mapping on the Dōgo Onsen Honkan "Dōgo Onsen + NAKED: MESSAGE - The Arrival of the Phoenix" began. Directly on the Dōgo Onsen Honkan building, which just this year greeted the new Reiwa era, the fantastical art of sound and light that collaborates with the original animation "Hi no Tori, the Phoenix: Dōgo Onsen Chapter" appears. With the statue of the Phoenix at its center, a scroll painting about Dōgo Onsen's history will be projected over the north side of Honkan. In tribute to the legend of the Tamanoishi which remains around Dōgo Onsen, it goes from the mythical age when Dōgo Onsen's protective deities - Ōkuninushi and Sukunahikona - flourished, to the Asuka era when the legend of Prince Shōtoku's visit takes place. The Phoenix, a symbol of eternal life, comes down and gives energy to the people who take great care of the place so it can be handed down to following generations. NAKED's new projection mapping which features onomatopoeia, a rhetorical technique in manga, is a must-see!

Dōgo Onsen, the famous hot spring with 3,000 years of history.
You can enjoy the bathing rooms which are reminiscent of Meiji 27 (A.D.1894),
when it was last renovated.
The stone bathing rooms adorned with Tobe porcelain panel paintings
and the baths with their large column-shaped water spouts called yugama are representative of the Dōgo Onsen Honkan's unique appeal.
